Garden Planning

The backyard garden is small but growing. I am slowly getting to know the soil as well as my family’s taste buds.

Here is an approximation of my plan for this year. While the plot is to scale, the plants are not.

Silliness in the garden

Here is another illustration from last year’s vegetable gardening. I don’t really know exactly what kind of effect coffee grounds have on slugs, but they don’t seem to like it. I have read that the grounds (post-coffee-making) are pretty much neutral pH so you don’t have to worry about disrupting the acidity of your soil. I have also seen slug fences created from baked egg shells and rose thorns (ouch!)

From the garden

I was going through my sketchbook and came across these garden illustrations from last year. Nothing is quite as calming as getting one’s hands in the soil and watching the plants progress each day. Is there anything more beautiful than a garlic scape or a snap pea vine or a beet green waving in the rain?
